Common wisdom says to stay put after a car accident, especially one that causes major bodily or property damage. Yet, this was not the case in a recent wreck in DeKalb County. Police are still searching for a man that crashed into a gas station sign, then quickly left.
Georgia State Patrol say that at about 7:20 a.m., the man sped from a traffic stop, then crashed into a Texaco gas station sign on Gresham Road in DeKalb. He took off on foot, leaving behind serious property damage — and something more important. According to reports, a 7-year-old girl was ejected from the car. The driver fled from the scene without her.
The entire incident started when the Georgia State Patrol tried to pull the man over on I-20 near Memorial Drive. However, as the officer made the stop, the man pulled over, then quickly sped off. The Georgia State Patrol officer gave chase on I-20 eastbound, but lost track of the driver. He was in a 2011 Audi, on the exit ramp to Gresham Road. He jumped the curb, then crashed into the Texaco sign pole, toppling it.
The gas station is equipped with a surveillance camera. That camera showed the man’s Audi flipped and nearly struck an SUV before slamming into the pole.
The 7-year-old girl, whose relationship with the man was not released, was taken to the hospital. However, her condition was not released.
The sign itself will cost about $20,000 to repair. The repairman said he’d never seen anything like it. It usually takes at least half an hour with a torch to cut through the pole, so it snapping after being hit by a car was “pretty amazing.”
