A man from Sharpsburg remains in critical condition after being involved in an accident on West Highway 16. According to officials, the accident occurred on December 24 in the early-morning hours. Witnesses stopped to help after reporting an explosion that resulted from the collision.
Officials indicate that the driver of a pickup truck crossed the center line and collided head on with a semi truck. The passenger in the pickup truck told responders that the truck was his and he had let his friend drive. There was no indication of why the young man did not maintain his lane of travel.
The collision sent the semi truck off of the roadway and into a telephone pole and mailbox. After striking these objects, the semi truck jackknifed and rolled onto its side. The driver was located sitting outside of his cab by witnesses who described his as visibly distraught. The cab of the semi truck was on fire when responders arrived on scene.
Witnesses also offered assistance to the driver of the pickup truck. Witnesses stayed with the man until responders arrived to remove him from the vehicle. It took less than 10 minutes to extricate the man. While it only took about 25 minutes to put the cab fire out, crews remained on scene for about two hours extinguishing hot spots.
