Gwinnett County, one of the most populous counties in Georgia, is known for its intersections and thoroughfares that create a complex and heavily trafficked road system. Collisions are unfortunately all too common, and some intersections in particular have seen more deadly accidents than others.
Using information from the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Crash Data Dashboard between 2016 and 2021, we identified seven of the most deadly intersections in Gwinnett County.
Exercising caution when navigating these dangerous spots is key to ensuring a safe commute — but if you do find yourself involved in an accident, don’t hesitate to contact Rafi Law Firm for advice and representation.
1. I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road (Gwinnett Place)
Located in Duluth, this busy intersection saw a total of five fatal accidents between 2016 and 2021. Gwinnett Place Mall’s close proximity to the intersection is largely to blame for the high traffic volume and subsequent accidents. This intersection is also known for its rather confusing traffic patterns, with drivers often having difficulty navigating the on- and off-ramps.
2. SR-316 and Cedars Road
Sharing the top spot with I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road, this intersection in Lawrenceville saw five fatal collisions during the same period. While not as busy as some of the other intersections on this list, this intersection’s high fatality rate is likely due in part to its complex, multi-lane design. Commercial drivers may also play a role in the number of collisions as SR-316 is a major trucking route.
3. I-85 and Indian Trail Lilburn Road
Exit 101 on I-85 in Norcross has been the site of four fatal collisions between 2016 and 2021, making it one of Gwinnett County’s deadliest intersections. This active interchange often sees heavy traffic volumes due to its proximity to numerous office parks, shopping complexes, and industrial sites. Drivers exiting or entering the high-speed interstate often misjudge their speed and fail to navigate the winding exit ramps, resulting in serious accidents.
4. I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard
Another Norcross intersection, this I-85 exit is notorious for its heavy truck traffic, tight turns, and confusing layout. Traffic lanes converge and diverge quickly in this location, making it difficult for drivers to anticipate the actions of other vehicles. The resulting combination of high speeds and distracted driving has led to four fatal accidents within a five-year period.
5. I-85 and Lawrenceville Suwanee Road
Suwanee’s primary exit from I-85 was home to four fatal accidents between 2016 and 2021. This intersection leads drivers to numerous shopping centers, office parks, and residential areas, making it a popular route for commuters. Speeds rapidly increase as drivers transition from the interstate to local roads, creating a dangerous situation for inexperienced or distracted drivers, especially during rush hour.
6. Sugarloaf Parkway and SR-316 (University Parkway)
Home to winding exit ramps and countless commercial drivers, this intersection in Lawrenceville was the site of four fatal collisions in five years. Gwinnett Technical College and the Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology are located just off this exit, making the area especially busy during school hours. Office parks and nearby residential areas also add to the traffic volume.
7. Lawrenceville Highway and Lawrenceville Suwanee Road
Situated between Lawrenceville and Duluth, this intersection witnessed four deadly collisions between 2016 and 2021. This intersection is particularly hazardous during rush hour traffic as drivers attempt to navigate the multitude of lanes on both roads. Heavy traffic from nearby Moore Middle School and a Walmart only adds to the congestion, and certain hours have been known to be especially dangerous.
Staying safe in Gwinnett County
While accidents can occur anywhere, intersections throughout Gwinnett County have proven to be particularly hazardous. Head-on and side-impact collisions are common at many of these intersections, as are rear-end collisions resulting from drivers failing to slow down or stop.
Staying safe while driving in the area requires diligence and concentration, even on roads that may seem familiar. Drivers should always obey speed limits, especially near schools and intersections, maintain proper lane discipline, and be aware of their surroundings at all times. In addition, drivers should take extra caution during rush hour and bad weather, when visibility is reduced or roads are slick.
These measures aren’t only important to keep ourselves safe but also to protect our fellow drivers. Despite our best efforts, accidents may still happen due to others’ negligence — when that happens, victims should seek legal counsel to ensure that they receive the compensation and justice they deserve.
