When is the last time you had to drive on ice-covered roads? If you live in metro Atlanta, the answer to that question is “this past weekend.” An unusual winter storm dumped snow and ice on several Georgia counties, prompting officials in the state to ask that people stay off roads when possible so the Department of Transportation could work to clear them of ice and snow.
Drivers throughout the south are not typically accustomed to driving in wintry-weather conditions, which can make travel for everyone hazardous. Officials ask that people take a moment to remember some safe driving tips:
- Drive slowly. If you are in a hurry to get where you are going, leave earlier instead of driving faster. It takes longer to brake on ice and snow, and it takes a greater distance to brake the faster you travel.
- Keep your lights on. It makes it easier to see your vehicle in low light. Keep your headlights on, even if you don’t believe you need them to see.
- Stay in your vehicle. If you happen to find yourself in an accident or stranded on the side of the road, do not leave your vehicle. You are putting yourself at risk by doing this, especially on treacherous roadways.
