People use valets every day. Whether having dinner at a four-star restaurant or shopping in an outdoor mall, valets are a useful resource for those that don’t want to fight for a parking space. In most cases, using a valet poses little threat to safety. This wasn’t the case for a Connecticut woman visiting Atlanta.
According to reports, the 33-year-old woman was struck by a car being driven by a valet. Five other people were hit while standing in Midtown near 1057 Juniper Street. The woman, along with the rest of the group, was standing between two cars just after midnight. One of the cars started rolling backward.
A valet jumped into the rolling car in an attempt to bring it to a stop. Sadly, the man hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. This caused the car to accelerate rapidly, striking the group. One woman was fatally injured in the accident, and five other people were treated for minor injuries. The woman who passed away succumbed to injuries she sustained while pinned between the two vehicles.
While this was a tragic accident, pedestrians are urged to be aware of their surroundings at all times, even in parking lots. Standing between cars can be a risky move that people don’t think about. Whether or not the valet in this incident will be charged with a crime was not immediately known.
